Switching from Asana Legacy Plans: A 2025 Guide to What You're Missing & How to Switch

Updated: 2 days ago

Abstract graphic representing growth and transition — symbolizing the benefits of switching from Asana legacy plans to feature-rich existing plans.

Still using Asana the way you set it up two years ago? You might be on a legacy plan without even realizing it - and missing out on a growing list of new features.

In my work as an Asana Solutions Partner, I regularly come across teams who are unknowingly missing out on powerful features like smart fields, AI tools, and advanced portfolio automation. The reason? They haven’t yet made the shift to one of Asana’s newer “existing” plans.

This article will walk you through why switching from Asana legacy plans matters — what’s no longer available on those old tiers, how to check your current plan, and what to do if it’s time to move forward.

1. Legacy vs. Existing Plans - What’s the Difference?

In November 2023, Asana introduced a new set of pricing tiers known as the existing plans — Starter, Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+. These replaced the older legacy plans (Premium, Business, and Enterprise (legacy)) that many teams are still using today.

Legacy Plans

Existing Plan

Premium

Starter

Business

Advanced

(Previously unavailable)

Enterprise

Enterprise (Legacy)

Enterprise+

The key difference? The existing plans are actively maintained and continue to receive all the latest updates and features. Meanwhile, legacy plans no longer get many of the newest tools, even if you're still paying a similar amount.

So if your workspace hasn’t switched over, there’s a good chance you’re working with fewer capabilities than you think.

  • When will Asana force the switch?

Right now, it’s unclear exactly when legacy plans will be discontinued. It's likely to happen upon your renewal in 2025 (or 2026?), but Asana hasn't confirmed a date yet.

  • Why switch now?

New features are only available on existing plans, meaning legacy plan users are already missing out on valuable updates like Smart Fields, Portfolio Rules, and AI-powered tools — not sometime in the future, but right now.

2. What You’re Missing by Not Switching from Asana Legacy Plans

If you're still on a legacy plan, here’s what you might be missing out on:

* AI Studio is available on Advanced plans on an annual payment cycle only.

** VOLs are available to Organizations, not Divisions, on an Enterprise plan.

3. What to Do If You're Still on a Legacy Plan

If you’re not sure whether you’re on a legacy plan or an existing one, here’s how to find out - and what to do next:

  1. Check your current plan: Go to the Admin Console and look at your billing details, or reach out to your Asana Account Rep.

  2. Talk to someone: You don’t have to navigate this alone. I help teams identify the right new Asana plan and demo the features they’ve been missing - so you can confidently switch and start getting the most out of your subscription.

A simple switch could unlock powerful new tools - often without changing your budget.
